Colourful school playground markings with hopscotch and number grids in Qatar

Overview

Bright, durable play markings that survive the sun

Playground markings in Qatar have to do two things at once: engage children and survive 45 °C tarmac, dust and daily foot traffic without fading or becoming slippery. UniGulf Traffic applies preformed thermoplastic play designs and coloured MMA surfacing that are made for outdoor use, with anti-slip texture and UV-stable pigments, so a school playground still looks and plays like new several terms later.

Most of our playground work uses preformed thermoplastic: pre-cut designs — hopscotch, number lines, clocks, compasses, maps, target games, sports court lines — that are laid on the asphalt and heat-fused into the surface. Because the design is manufactured, colours are consistent and lines are exact, and the thickness (around 3 mm) gives years of wear. For large coloured areas such as mini roads, sports courts and safety zones we use coloured MMA or acrylic surfacing with an anti-slip aggregate.

We work with school facilities teams, nursery operators, park contractors and landscape architects, usually during holidays or after hours, and we design to the age group: simple shapes and numbers for nurseries, multi-game grids and court markings for primary and secondary schools.

Materials & specification

Materials built for outdoor play

Preformed thermoplastic play markings are pre-cut sheets of pigmented thermoplastic with an anti-slip aggregate, heat-applied to asphalt at around 3 mm thickness. They bond into the surface, will not peel like paint and keep their colour under UV. For coloured areas we apply MMA cold plastic or acrylic surfacing with a fine aggregate for grip — MMA where the area is large and the life must be long, acrylic where budget leads. Surfaces must be asphalt or a sound, primed concrete; rubber wet-pour and artificial turf need different systems, which we advise on case by case.

All materials used on play areas are lead-free and applied so that the finished texture is non-slip in both dry and damp conditions.

MaterialsPreformed thermoplastic play designs; coloured MMA or acrylic surfacing with anti-slip aggregate
ThicknessPreformed thermoplastic approx. 3 mm; surfacing 1–3 mm
ApplicationHeat-fused (thermoplastic); screed or roller (surfacing)
ColoursFull colour range — red, yellow, blue, green, white, orange, purple
Anti-slipAggregate in the material for dry and damp grip
UV stabilityPigmented for outdoor use; colour-fast in Qatar sun
ReopeningThermoplastic in minutes; MMA 20–40 minutes; acrylic within an hour
SurfaceAsphalt (best); primed concrete; not suitable for wet-pour rubber without a special system
Expected life in QatarSeveral years for thermoplastic designs; refresh cycles for surfacing

Where it is used

Where playground markings are used

Primary and secondary schools, international schools, nurseries and kindergartens, community and municipal parks, residential compound play areas, sports clubs and mosque or community-centre courtyards. Mini road layouts are popular for road-safety education programmes, and multi-use games areas let one yard host football, basketball and netball. We frequently mark the school car park and drop-off zone in the same visit — see car park line marking — and where a whole yard needs a fresh surface we combine play markings with coloured MMA surfacing.

How we work

Our road marking process — survey to handover

01

Site visit & survey

An engineer measures the site, checks the surface condition, confirms the layout against your drawings or the QCS/Ashghal standard and agrees access, traffic management and working hours.

02

Setup & surface preparation

Traffic control is placed, old or faded lines are removed if required, and the surface is cleaned, dried and primed where the material specification calls for it.

03

Application

Markings are set out and applied with our own machines — thermoplastic, cold paint or MMA — with glass beads dropped on for retro-reflectivity and thickness checked during the run.

04

Inspection & handover

Dimensions, colour, thickness and reflectivity are checked, snags are closed the same visit, and you receive a handover with material data sheets for your submittal file.

Why UniGulf Traffic

A road marking contractor main contractors can rely on

Own equipment

Thermoplastic pre-heaters and screed applicators, airless spray line stripers, bead dispensers and removal equipment are ours — no waiting on hired plant.

Night-shift & closure windows

Crews are set up for lane closures, night works and airside or live-traffic sites where the marking window is a few hours, not a few days.

Itemised quotations

Every quotation is broken down by line type, length or area, material and mobilisation so QS teams can compare and approve it quickly.

Site conditions & price

Site conditions and what affects the price

Play markings are priced per design and per square metre of coloured surfacing. The main variables are the number and complexity of designs, the size of coloured areas and the condition of the surface. New asphalt is ideal; old, cracked or crumbling asphalt needs repair first, and painted surfaces must be removed before thermoplastic is applied. Schools usually schedule us during holidays so the yard is clear, which also lets us finish larger layouts in one continuous run.

We provide a layout drawing or mock-up before we start so the school can see where each game sits and how children will move between them.

FAQ

Playground markings — FAQ

Questions we get from QS teams, consultants and facility managers. Anything else — call +974 5556 3941.

Mainly preformed thermoplastic — pre-cut, pigmented designs with anti-slip aggregate that are heat-fused into asphalt — plus coloured MMA or acrylic surfacing for larger areas. Both are made for outdoor use and are lead-free.
Outdoor-grade pigments are UV-stable and keep their colour for years. Paint-based markings fade fastest; thermoplastic and MMA hold colour best, which is why we recommend them for playgrounds.
No. The materials contain an anti-slip aggregate and are finished with a textured surface, so they provide grip in dry and damp conditions.
Yes, after hours or over weekends, but school holidays are ideal because the whole yard can be completed in one run and the surface is clear of children while the material sets.
Asphalt is best. Sound concrete can be marked with a primer. Rubber wet-pour and artificial turf need special systems, which we advise on after seeing the surface.
A typical primary school yard with a dozen designs and a mini road layout takes one to three days depending on size and surface preparation.
